First 'Bitcoin baby' born after parents pay for fertility treatment in digital currency

The world's first baby bought entirely with Bitcoins has been born in California after the infant's parents paid for fertility treatments using only Bitcoins.

Dr. C. Terence Lee, a fertility specialist based in Brea, Calif., flashed a photo of a beaming infant across a projection screen at the Bitcoin 2013 conference as he announced that the baby was bought with bitcoin, CNN Money reported.

Lee said that it's the first time he's aware of that anyone has paid for fertility treatments that way.

The baby is reportedly the biggest victory yet for Lee in his campaign to persuade his patients to pay him for his services with bitcoins- the experimental digital currency.

Lee put an ad up on Reddit last year offering a "male fertility evaluation" -basically, a sperm test - in return for 15 bitcoins, which at the time were worth around 5 dollars each.

He said that the customer who finally took up the offer didn't actually care about his sperm count and just wanted to participate in what may have been the world's first bitcoin-funded medical transaction.

The doctor's breakthrough came after a couple whom he had helped have three children came back wanting to have a fourth baby.

The couple owed 1,000 dollars for his services.
