At least five persons were killed and several others got injured after a three-storey building collapsed in Thane area, in the suburbs of Mumbai, early this morning.

According to locals, the incident took place at around 2:30 a.m. when the Shakuntala building located in Mumbra locality of Thane collapsed.

Soon six fire trucks and officials of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were rushed to the spot and began rescue operations.

General Secretary of Jamiat Ulama e Maharashtra, Halim Ullah, said that the police had shown complete ineptitude in dealing with the calamity and the rescue work only started when the NDRF team reached the scene.

"As soon as the youths of our organization got news of the incident, they reached the spot but when the police team reached here they just stood by idly. When the NSRF team came here from Andheri and Pune then the rescue work started here," said Ullah.

"Till now, 15 to 16 people have been injured and five dead bodies have been recovered which are in Shivaji Talwa hospital and Civil hospital in Thane," he added.

This recent incident comes two months after another building in the locality collapsed in April, killing over 70 persons.
