Flood alert issued in Jorhat, Barpeta districts of Assam

The state disaster management authority in Assam has issued a flood alert at five revenue circles in Jorhat and Barpeta districts for the next 24 hours.

The alert has been sounded at Majuli river island in Jorhat and four other revenue circles in Barpeta.

Several rivers including Brahmaputra are in spate at several places. Over 200 villages have been submerged in floods in six districts.

As per reports, the Brahmaputra and its a few tributaries are flowing above the danger level.

However, no new areas have been inundated in Jorhat district during last 24 hours. Over 200 villages have been submerged in six districts in current floods.

 

As many as 326 villages in eight districts of Assam have been affected in recent flood. 53 hectare of crop area in 20 villages got submerged in Barpeta district. Flood water also damaged roads and river embankments at many places.

Overall, nearly 19 thousand hectare of agriculture land is inundated due to floods in nine districts.

Many people are taking shelter at temporary relief camps in three districts and administrations have distributed relief materials.

The Kamrup Metro district administration has appealed people to vacate the landslide prone areas.

Several landslide cases have been reported in greater Guwahati city during last few days, claiming lives of at least five persons.
