Popular musician and folk singer of Manipur, Guru Rewben Mashangva, sang for peace in a musical campaign held in state capital Imphal recently.

Mashangva is now using his Roland ampli-speaker not for belting out his compositions, but for campaigning for peace in the state and in the rest of the north east region.

"The acoustic sound is what I like, because my music and my thoughts are very simple, it is either black or white and that is what my music to be like, clean and clear and simple," said Mashangva.

Mashangva is responsible for reviving the musical tradition of Tangkhul folk songs by using traditional musical instruments, who has settled with his six-member family at Nagaram tribal pocket in Imphal.

Mashangva, known as the King of Naga Folk Blues, and Imphal Talkies singer Sachidananda Angom launched the musical campaign for change under the theme "Winning Peace Together" at the conference hall of Tribal Research Institute in Imphal.

"Music can be seen as something that bridges the gap between different kinds of people, ethnicities, in northeast we hardly know the Hindi singers or those folk singers but after listening to their music we could associate with the music even if we do not know their language. So, music is a powerful tool," said Angom.

The event was organised in collaboration with Change Support Group and Folk Art and Cultural Guild, Manipur.

In quest for peace and freedom in a world and to end the mutual hatred amongst the different ethnic communities, for their own vested interests, Rewben Mashangva started his musical campaign in February 2011.

Although it was a small event, intellectual educated youth, hailing from different ethnic communities, came for the musical extravaganza to absorb themselves in the sweet tunes of Rewben Mashangva.
