Footballers using loans to fund gambling addictions, claims clinic boss

The chief executive of Sporting Chance Clinic, Colin Bland has revealed that an increasing number of players have been caught up in taking out payday loans in order to place bets.

According to the Mirror, Bland also revealed that the organization was working with players from all levels and it was not uncommon for them to have one in a cycle of payday loans and gambling.

The revelation comes after former Manchester United winger Keith Gillespie recently admitted gambling away 7million pounds, the report said.

Bland also said that even high earners have confessed they can't afford the amount they were betting, the report added.

 

He added that they had stories of young player being emailed that they had been noticed gambling with specific sites and were given bonuses of 1000 pounds in their casino accounts just to get them going again.

Sporting Chance, founded by former Arsenal and England captain Tony Adams, runs seminars to educate players, the report further said.

Bland said that he did not like the way the betting firms advertised on TV during soccer games, adding that it was quite aggressive and it was not the way in which a provider of alcohol would be allowed to advertise.
