The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) conducted a surprise security check at the Indo-Nepal international border adjoining Gorakhpur following reports of smuggling of arms and ammunitions.

The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) conducted surprise security checks to ensure that the biggest democratic exercise in the country is carried out peacefully.

The security personnel and dog squads checked the vehicles and luggage crossing over from Nepal, as lack of required equipment and vigil at the border had made it an easy route for smugglers to bring in explosives.

"It is election time and we have had reports that bombs are being smuggled from Nepal into India. That is why we are conducting surprise checking. We are spread at different places," said B.L. Datta, an SSB inspector.

Recently, two militants, who tried to cross over from the other side of the border, were arrested in Gorakhpur.

The security forces have been put on high alert after the incident.

Meanwhile, residents lauded the efforts and initiative taken by security personnel and have shown full cooperation with the border guards.

"Taking precaution, security agencies on the India Nepal border are conducting security operations. As a responsible citizen we should cooperate and this initiative is very good to keep the unity and integrity of the country strong," said Ifteqar Hussain, a resident of Gorakhpur.
