Former Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir passed away after a prolonged illness on Sunday at 2.52 p.m.
Earlier in the day, Justice Kabir, 68, was reported to be in a critical condition and was kept on life support. He was undergoing treatment at Apollo Gleneagles Hospital here.
Justice Kabir's current admission, on February 8, was with symptoms of fever with chills, urinary retention, haematuria and extreme weakness. He was suffering from end-stage renal disease, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Coronary Artery Disease and Urinary Tuberculosis.
Justice Kabir held office from September 2012 till his retirement on July 2013. He was the 39th Chief Justice of India.
He was also the Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court in 2005.
Justice Kabir also assumed the office of acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court on January 11, 2005.
