Former Norwegian prime minister and negotiator, Jens Stoltenberg has been reportedly chosen by Nato as its next secretary general.

Stoltenberg, 55, will assume the role of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation secretary general from 1 October.

The move comes in the wake of growing animosity between US and Russia over Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region, News 24 reported.

Frank Aarebrot, professor of comparative politics at the University of Bergen and an acquaintance of Stoltenberg said that if the task for Nato now is to defuse the crisis with Russia over Ukraine, then Stoltenberg will be eminent.

Jan Egeland, a former UN Under-Secretary General said that his strength is that he's got a vast political network and good political intuition, adding that he will also listen to civil society, not just people within the 'security cage'.
