Mumbai Police on Tuesday arrested four people in connection with the recent attack on a church in Navi Mumbai.

"We suspected some locals who used to gamble and create ruckus near the church. The men vandalized the church out of retaliation when church officials confronted them for causing ruckus. Police were successful in nabbing all the perpetrators of the crime," said Additional ACP Crime F.K. Patil.

Earlier on Monday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had set a 48 hours deadline for the police to nab the men who vandalised the church.

There was also an uproar in the Maharashtra Assembly over the issue during which the opposition targeted the government by saying that the minorities in the state are living in fear.

On Saturday, three unidentified men hurled stones inside the St. George Catholic Church compound in New Panvel of Navi Mumbai. The attackers also damaged the glass enclosure of the statue of Saint George.

CCTV footage of the incident showed the attackers speeding away on motorcycles after the incident.
