Fox Searchlight's 'Battle of the Sexes' to release in September

Tennis fans, Rejoice! 'Battle of the Sexes' is coming to the big screen.

Fox Searchlight announced that ripped-from-the-headlines story of the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, will hit theatres on September 22, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie will see Oscar winner Emma Stone, playing Billy Jean King and Steve Carrell, playing Bobby Riggs.

The project helmed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris is written by Simon Beaufoy.

'Battle of the Sexes' recalls the showdown between world no. 1 King and retired champ and serial hustler Riggs that became one of the most-watched televised sporting events of all time.

 

The match sparked a global conversation on gender equality, spurring on the feminist movement, while King and Riggs fought more personal and complex battles - King with her sexuality and her plight for equal pay, and Riggs with protecting his reputation while reliving his glory days.

The flick also stars Alan Cumming, Andrea Riseborough, Elizabeth Shue, Austin Stowell and Sarah Silverman.
