Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari today announced that traffic defaulters will soon face strict action. He also said that encouraging the use of public transport, starting inland waterways and regularization of road traffic offences in a time bound frame would be his ministry's top priority.
He said, "Sophisticated IT systems will be implemented within a month to catch traffic violators. First time offenders will face a fine and after three times the license will get suspended for six months. Cameras will be installed at traffic lights. If offenders don't pay the fine, a criminal case would be lodged against them."
The minister also spoke about the need to ensure that people sitting in the back of a car also wear a seat belt. This announcement comes after reports claiming that Union Minister Gopinath Munde could have been saved if he was wearing a seat belt. Munde died in an accident on Tuesday when his car was hit by an Indica.
