The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report that a woman constable was gang raped by her colleagues at Maoranipur in Jhansi District and also issued a notice to the Jhansi Senior Superintendent of Police, seeking a report within two weeks.
The commission has observed that the contents of the report, if true, raises a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim.
According to the media report, carried on the October 6 and forwarded by a human rights activist, the woman constable, a resident of Mainpuri , was posted at the Etawah Police Line. She had come to Maoranipur, Jhansi for duty at the Jal Vihar for fifteen days.
After the fair, when she was returning on September28, she was enticed by her two male constable colleagues and taken in a car driven by another person. She was subjected to gang-rape by them in the car before being let off.
She was admitted in a critical condition to the Etawah district hospital.
