Legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar has not been gentle in his mocking England, following Eoin Morgan's men's pitiful performance at the Cricket World Cup 2015, and has not only taken a hit at their cricket team but their football team as well, claiming that they are an overrated team in both games.
England failed to make it to the World Cup quarterfinals following their 15-run loss to Bangladesh on Monday and no one has been gentle in their remarks for the team after their dismal campaign in the tournament.
However, Gavaskar has topped the list for dishing out scathing remarks on England. He claimed that it would have been easier playing England in the quarters, insisting that look at their form, and pointed out that they have won only one game, adding that they are a nothing side, News.com.au reported.
The Indian batting legend said that every time there is a World Cup in football, everyone speaks how England would do this and that but he insisted that at the end of the day, they are just an overrated team both cricket-wise and football-wise.
England's performance has many critics wondering again how a country which invented the sport could have plummeted so far in cricket's elite international competition. The country's results at World Cups since reaching the final in 1992, the last time the tournament was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, have been poor.
England have since made it to the quarterfinals in 1996, followed by a group-stage exit in 1999 and 2003, then they went on to finish fifth in the Super Eight in 2007 and missed out on the semifinals, and then the last eight in 2011.
Since 1996, England has only a 27 percent success rate against full member nations in World Cup matches. They focus more on Test cricket, and England just doesn't seem to take ODIs seriously enough, the report added.
