Manchester United legend George Best's family is praying England footballer Paul Gascoigne can beat the booze addiction that killed the star before his wife divorced him.

According to the Daily Star, Best's widow Alex and son Calum expressed it was heartbreaking watching ITV documentary Being Paul Gascoigne, which showed Gazza battling chronic alcoholism.

The 46-year-old former England star broke down in tears on screen as he told how he prayed drink would not kill him, the report said.

Alex, 41, who divorced George in 2004 a year before his death from organ failure at 59, tweeted that she was watching the Gazza programme and it brought back so many similarities to Best, adding that she would pray for him.

Gazza's son Regan, 17, and stepdaughter Bianca, 26, were swamped with messages of support after the documentary showed them struggling to understand one of their father's relapses that led to his arrest, the report added.

Ex-Everton captain Phil Neville, 36, tweeted that he felt sad watching it, the report further said.
