German golfer and former world number one Martin Kaymer reportedly won The Players Championship with a one-shot victory on Sunday after he sank one of the most unlikely pars on the 17th green at the TPC Sawgrass.
The German had nearly blown a three-shot lead following a 90-minute rain delay until his 30-foot tee shot cleared the water, landed on a mound over the bunker, but it mysteriously spun hard back towards the front of the green until it finally settled into the clumpy collar a foot from the bulkhead and the German made the putt, pumping his fist in a rare show of emotion.
Followed by the 17th hole, reportedly the most exciting on the Stadium Course, Kaymer made a putt from the fairway on 18th, which settled 3 feet behind the hole, and the German was as much relieved as excited when he knocked it in, reports The Washington Times.
Kaymer finished at 13-under 275 to join an elite group by winning the biggest event on golf's strongest tour. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott are the only other players to win a major, a World Golf Championship and The Players Championship, the report added.
