Joining the international coalition in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), the German cabinet approved plans to commit up to 1,2000 soldiers.
According to the Guardian, German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed to France's request to provide support for its operations against Isis in Syria, following the 13/11 carnage in Paris.
Germany also plans on sending reconnaissance aircraft, tanker planes and a warship to the region in support roles, but will not actively engage in combat.
The mandate is for one year at a cost of €134m (£94m) and can be extended next year.
