Top ranked Germany produced an outstanding performance as they thrashed Sweden 4-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women's World Cup.

After sailing easily through the preliminary round of the tournament, forwards Anja Mittag and Celia Sasic helped their side to showcase their dominance in the game.

Mittag opened the scoring for the German side in the 24th minute while Sasic scored her two goals in the 35th and 78th minute of the game, the BBC reported.

Sweden, who are placed fifth in the world rankings, showed some spirit after a late Linda Sembrant header but rarely threatened and Dzsenifer Marozsan sealed the win for Germany.

Germany will now play France or South Korea, who meet on Sunday, while England will play Norway in their last-16 match on Monday.
