England captain Steven Gerrard has said that their squad can win the FIFA World Cup 2014, given the low expectations of their fans.

Gerrard, who also captains Liverpool, believes that England's fans' low expectations of their chances to win the tournament might prove to be the key to victory as it would take the pressure off the players.

Gerrard said that the England squad dreams of winning the tournament as there is no harm in it because what if they win and prove all the doubters wrong and go on to have a successful World Cup, the Daily Star reported.

The skipper added that in reality there are a lot of top teams going to the World Cup and it is a very difficult competition, but there is excitement and belief in the squad that they can do well.

However, football legend Pele has rubbished Gerrard's claims and revealed that he is backing Brazil, Germany or Spain to lift the trophy.

Pele said that he hopes Brazil would win the World Cup, but for him the two best teams in Europe are Germany and Spain, adding that the Spanish squad has played outstanding football for a number of years.
