A 16-year-old Dalit girl who immolated herself in Punjab died after succumbing to 70 percent burns at Chandigarh's Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research today morning.

The daughter of a brick-kiln worker in Sangrur, she was harassed for twenty days at Kal Banjara village before she immolated herself.

She accused four people from the Jat community- -three from her village and the fourth from neighboring Khadewal village - of harassing her.

The Police registered the case only on Monday even though the girl immolated herself on Saturday. The cops reportedly stated that they were busy with security arrangements for Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal's visit to Sangrur on Sunday.

The victim had said that she was being followed from her village to the school and that the boys would pass obscene comments and make vulgar gestures on the road and even at the bus stop.

All the four accused are absconding and the police are making efforts to arrest them.
