Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Friday said that he was extremely glad to know that the nurses who recently returned from Iraq are getting employment offers and financial assistance.
"We are all very much relived because of the safe return of nurses. We are happy that the nurses are receiving offers to work within Kerala and outside Kerala. I am glad that they are getting financial assistance," said Chandy.
"The Iraqi government informed the Indian embassy that they will collect the money of these nurses and reimburse the money to the Indian embassy. When the nurses came back, we enquired about their problems. They pointed to two major problems which was future employment and repayment of loans. Therefore, C.K Menon has offered to pay a sum of three lakhs to these nurses," he added.
The 46 Indian nurses, who had been held captive in Iraq, landed in Kochi on Saturday.
There were about 10,000 Indians in Iraq before the start of the strife between government troops and Sunni militants. The militants have captured two key cities and have their sights set on Baghdad. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been displaced in the fighting that broke out on June 10.
