Goa Deputy Chief Minister Francis D'Souza on Saturday won from the Mapusa assembly seat by a margin of 6,806 votes.

He defeated his nearest rival MGP's Vinod Phadke, who is also the secretary of the Goa Cricket Association.

According to the Election Commission of India data, Mapusa has a total of 25,659 registered voters, out of which 12,755 are male and 12,904 are female.

Francis D'Souza holds the health and town and country planning portfolios.

The 62-year-old sitting MLA from Mapusa was among the first Catholic leaders to join the BJP two decades ago.

He was the front runner for the post of chief minister when former CM Manohar Parrikar was elevated as defence minister, but he had lost stake to Laxmikant Parsekar.

D'Souza has declared one criminal case against himself including rioting and criminal intimidation.

In 2012, D'Souza had shown his movable and immovable assets at Rs 3.15 crore.
