'Godfather' cinematographer Gordon Willis dies at 82

Gordon Willis, the cinematographer responsible for the blockbuster film 'The Godfather' has died at the age of 82.

Richard Crudo, president of the American Society of Cinematographers confirmed the news to CNN, stating that Willis, who was known as 'The Prince of Darkness' for his use of shadow in cinema, changed the world's perception of movies.

His work will keep influencing the following generations of artists and he will be sorely missed he added.

Though Willis never won a competitive Oscar and was nominated only twice throughout his career, he was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2009 for "unsurpassed mastery of light, shadow, color and motion".

 

Willis' other works included films like 'Manhattan', 'Annie Hall', 'The Paper Chase', 'The Parallax View', and 'Zelig'.
