The Congress on Monday hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for raking up the 1984 riots, saying that they had already apologised for the horrific incident but the then Gujarat chief minister was yet to tender his apology for 'engineering' the Godhra riots.

"The Godhra riots are the Prime Minister's past. He cannot say a word about intolerance since he is the very example of it. What happened in Delhi was beyond the control of anybody but he engineered and controlled everything that happened in Godhra, so Modi ji better not rake up this issue," Congress leader P.C Chacko told ANI.

He reminded the Prime Minister that a man of his stature can't sink this low and make cheap comments.

Asserting that the Congress had already apologised for the riots, Chacko said that the Prime Minister was yet to apologise for his involvement in the Godhra riots.

"He is personally responsible for Godhra. His own ministers are in jail today, so why is he preaching sermons to others? He is not qualified to comment on this," Chacko said.

Addressing in rally in Purnea earlier today, Prime Minister Modi hit back at the Congress and reminded the grand old party of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

"They (Congress) have been in power for more than 35 years. Today is November 2. Remember November 2 of 1984. There was killing of Sikhs in the entire nation following the days when Indira Gandhi was assassinated. There were serious allegations against the Congress Party and its leaders," he said.
