Greater Cooch Behar People's Association calls off stir

The Greater Cooch Behar People's Association (GCPA), which was demanding UT status for Cooch Behar, has called off their protest, said District Collector P. Ulaganathan on Tuesday.

Earlier today, at least eight police personnel and six protesters were injured during a GCPA's rail roko agitation. The GCPA members allegedly clashed with police at New Cooch Behar railway station when police were trying to dislodge them.

Train services were disrupted for the fourth day as the GCPA members put up a rail blockade at New Cooch Behar station.

As many as 15 protesters have been detained in this connection.

The protests were demanding 'C' category statehood or Union Territory status for Cooch Behar district.

Three passengers have died in the four-day long protest. Meanwhile, several trains were diverted and some services had to be terminated.

North Frontier Railway officials said the train services would return to normal by Tuesday night.
