The Greek authorities have suspended professional football in the country indefinitely after violence broke out during Panathinaikos' 2-1 win over arch-rivals Olympiakos in their Super League tie on Sunday.

Earlier, the league was marred by violence and subsequently got suspended twice this season in September and November.

Reflecting on the issue, Super League president Giorgos Borovilos said that they had a new government who were looking to bring the subject up for discussion and implement state laws related to it, the BBC reported.

Borovilos added that the government wanted games to start again as soon as possible, but for that they want to see immediate reactions from all of them.

The two Athens clubs are widely recognized for sharing a fierce rivalry.
