Malayalam writer Sarah Joseph, who returned the Kendra Sahitya Akademi award, on Saturday, said that growing incidents of communal violence is affecting plurality and democracy of the country.

She also expressed concern over the prevailing 'fear inducing environment' in the country.

"The growing communal violence in this country is a horrific sign. In India there is this fear-inducing environment for the artists, social activists and above all, all Indians..I fear that this will affect the plurality and the democracy of the country," Joseph told ANI.
