Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Gujarat met on Tuesday with the main focus on discussing state chief Narendra Modi's successor.

After voting ended for India's nine-phase general election on Monday, exit polls showed the BJP and its allies would touch half-way mark in the 543-member in Lok Sabha of the parliament.

If BJP is elected to power post poll results on May 16, party's prime ministerial candidate Modi will have to give up his post of Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Apart from looking for Modi's replacement, many other issues were also discussed at the BJP core group meeting in Gandhinagar.

One of the BJP leaders attending the meet said final decision has not been taken yet but it will be taken in the interest of people of Gujarat.

"In order to tread Gujarat on the path of progress a best decision will be taken by the party," said BJP leader, Om Prakash Mathur.

Reportedly, BJP leader Anandiben Jethabhai Patel seems to be a strong contender for the post of Gujarat's CM as she is the most senior and experienced minister in the cabinet in the state.
