Unidentified gunmen on Tuesday killed a police officer and injured two others in Egypt's southern Qena province.

"Unidentified gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in a mountainous area of Qena," Anadolu news agency quoted a local security source as saying.

However, Egypt's Interior Ministry has not released an official statement on the incident so far.

Earlier in the day, five "militant extremists" were reportedly killed by the Egyptian army in the volatile Sinai Peninsula.

Military spokesman Tamer al-Refaei said in a statement that army and air force in a joint operation struck an underground bunker used by extremist elements in central Sinai

Three "extremist elements" were also arrested in the same operation.

Hundreds of Egyptian security personnel have been killed in militant attacks across Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, which has remained the epicenter of a deadly militant insurgency since mid-2013, when Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's first freely-elected president, was ousted in a military coup.
