Reigning Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton has said that his champagne spraying incident was kind of a fun thing as he insisted that his actions were through excitement following his triumph in the Chinese Grand Prix last weekend.

Hamilton sprayed champagne in the face of a Chinese Grand Prix podium hostess after winning the race and the incident, captured in photographs that showed the woman flinching as the Mercedes driver aimed a stream of champagne at her, earned him a good many remarks from critics in Britain and Germany as well as on Chinese social media.

However, the woman herself played down what happened and Hamilton said he was relieved to hear that. The racer said that ultimately it was a great weekend, and generally his actions are through excitement, The Mirror reported.

The Briton said that this is Formula One, it's the pinnacle of motorsport and he had just won a grand prix for the team, adding that one should see it was a kind of a fun thing. He claimed that he would never, ever intend to disrespect or try to embarrass someone like that.

Hamilton said it had not overshadowed his week because he had only just been briefed on the controversy, and questioned why it had been brought up. He said that this is a sport that so many people love, and the more they show character and fun it reflects just how great this sport is, and he added that that's what he tries to do.

The two time world champion claimed that it hasn't affected him, and it's nice to know that the lady kind of wrote in, adding that if she had written in and said she was really unhappy then perhaps he would be more concerned.
