Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden has expressed that he would like to see veteran all-rounder Shane Watson, instead of Mitch Marsh, play in the World Cup knockout stages.

Watson, who came under severe pressure due to his lack of form, batted at number six and smacked a brisk 67 runs off 41 balls in Australia's 64-run win over Sri Lanka in Pool A tie on Sunday in Sydney.

Backing the veteran all-rounder, Hayden said that Watson over Marsh seems like a good solid option, adding that the former has experience, three World Cups under his belt and finally something seemed to click within him the other night, News.com.au reported.

Hayden further said that unfortunately Marsh would miss out, adding that he has done everything he could to play well in the tournament and has learnt a lot, insisting that Marsh would get his turn and he has got another two World Cups ahead of him.

Hayden added that with Watson back in the side, he could strengthen their death bowling options as well.
