England batsman Joe Root needed four stitches in a facial injury he got when Josh Hazlewood bowled a delivery that was deflected into the grill of his helmet in the first T20 international against Australia.

According to The Guardian, David Warner had earlier punched Root in a pub and had been taken out of the team for quite some time, missing the first and second Ashes Tests.

England captain Stuart Broad said unsympathetically, that it was not the first blow the player has had to his face this summer and he would get over it quickly.

Australia will play the second T20 international against England today at Chester-le-Street.
