Fast bowler John Hastings has been retained in Australia's squad for the third one-day international against India in Melbourne as team's bowling spearhead Josh Hazlewood has been given an extended break for the remainder of the home international season.

Confirming the news, Australia's head coach Darren Lehmann said Hazlewood has played all six Tests this summer and has had a high workload, news.com.au reports.

He added that the on that basis only the decision has been made to give him a break to allow him to recharge both physically and mentally ahead of the New Zealand tour in February.

Backing the decision, the Australian head coach said that they regard it as sensible management of the player and it is an approach that they have adopted successfully over a significant period of time, especially in the one-day format.

New South Wales's (NSW) Hazlewood played the first one-day international against India in Perth on Tuesday but not the second game in Brisbane on Friday.

He'll now be rested from the final three matches plus the Twenty20 series against India that will follow in late January.
