ANI Dehradun

The director of the disaster management Centre, Piyoosh Rautella predicted heavy rainfall for Saturday and Sunday in Uttarakhand.

"There can be heavy rainfall in different parts of the state. Pilgrimage path at different places are facing some difficulties. Today the yatra has been halted. The bulletin released by weather department says that there could be heavy rainfall today and tomorrow in the hilly area," said Rautella.

"There are around 60 pilgrims in Gangotri, eight in Licholi and 45 in Badrinath. All the arrangements related to their food and health facilities have been made for pilgrimages. Many could be at Joshimath and many could be in Srinagar city but they are safe. There is nothing to worry. Tomorrow we will look at the weather situation again," he added.

A similar alert was sounded by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) also on July 16.

The hilly terrain witnessed minor landslides on July 14 and pilgrims were left stranded with the traffic being halted on several arterial roads.

The officials are being particularly cautious in wake of last year's flash floods that devastated the entire region and killed almost 6,000 people, including many pilgrims visiting Kedarnath and Badrinath.

Last year, after the floods, two million people, one-fifth of region's population, have had their lives disrupted by the devastation.
