Heavy rainfall damages crops in Kashmir

Farmers in Kashmir have incurred huge losses as heavy rainfall has damaged wheat crops, washing away prospects of bumper wheat production.

Normal life was hit after rainwater inundated the agricultural fields and wreaked havoc in Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir.

An irate farmer, Rajan, on Friday expressed dismay as all the wheat has become wet due to incessant rainfall.

"Heavy rainfall has resulted in huge loss as wheat crops have become wet. The farmers and landlords are facing losses. The government should take a note of it and we should get compensation," he said.

Millions of small farmers are struggling to survive as erratic weather hits their only source of income. They are seeking government help to stay afloat until the next harvest, but bureaucrats are moving slowly to record crop losses.

Anger is mounting among affected farmers tired of hearing empty promises. Many have given up hope.

"It has been continuously raining for the past two-three months. It only stops for one hour or so. All our crops have become wet," said another farmer, Kalyani Singh.
