Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh on Thursday stoked a controversy by saying that the alleged gang-rape of a student of the local Government Post-Graduate College was an attempt to 'malign somebody'.

"The lady concerned has been traced and she is in police custody. It appears that whatever was there in the press was an organized attempt to malign somebody," Singh said.

"The interrogation is going on. It seems the girl was being used to malign somebody. The police is investigating, actions will be taken," he added.

Meanwhile, students of the Government Post-Graduate College took to the streets to protest the alleged gang-rape of the undergraduate student.

The incident reportedly took place inside the college campus last Friday.
