Swiss tennis star Martina Hingis, the former beloved of women's tennis, had been on fire in the US Open doubles with her Italian partner Flavia Pennetta when she reportedly smelt something odd.

Hingis and her doubles partner Pennetta were playing against Australia's Jarmila Gajdosova and Ajla Tomljanovic at the time. And as the five-time grand slam winner made her way towards the umpire's chair for the change of ends, she waved her hands in front of her face and said that someone is 'smoking some heavy s**t'.

One would assume that Hingis had been referring to marijuana, News.com.au reported.

Hingis has not competed in the main draw of a grand slam singles tournament since her retirement in 2007, but has made her way back onto the court via doubles. She and Pennetta overcame the fumes to triumph 6-1, 6-4 and move into the quarterfinals.

Hingis has had issues with drugs in the past, banned from the game for two years after testing positive to cocaine, the report added.
