Conservationists in Pakistan are urging UNESCO to stop part of Sindh cultural festival being held on World Heritage site, Mohenjo Daro.

According to the group of scholars and archaeologists, the opening ceremony of the Sindh cultural festival is capable of damaging the ruins of Mohenjo Daro - the world's oldest surviving city dating back to the pre-Hindu Indus Valley civilization, the BBC reported.

The festival is the brainchild of the Pakistan People's Party, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, which is being seen as an attempt to make his local credentials strong - something that critics, citing his foreign education and privileged upbringing, fault him for.

Bhutto Zardari dismissed the criticism, saying that organisers were taking the utmost care and the event would go ahead as planned on Saturday.

Farzand Masih, head of the Department of Archaeology at Punjab University, said that the laser and spotlights would cause rapid decay at the site already exposed to many negative factors.
