Wayne Rooney will be hoping to surpass Bobby Charlton's all-time scoring record for England when he captains his side against San Marino in the Euro 2016 qualifier in Serravalle on Saturday.

The 29-year-old Manchester United striker is currently one goal below Charlton's mark of 49 and a brace on Saturday would propel him into the history books.

In addition, an England victory would ensure Roy Hodgson's side qualify from Group E with three games to spare.

Describing Rooney as an incredible talent and a world-class player, fellow striker Harry Kane said that he hoped the England captain could break the record on this trip, adding that he had trained very hard to reach this position, Sport24 reported.

Although Rooney is yet to score in the Premier League this season, he had scored a brilliant hat-trick at Club Brugge in the Champions League play-off round last month.
