The Hindustan Latex Family Planning Promotion Trust (HLFPPT) has invited contributions from individuals through an innovative crowd-funding platform to support a project providing healthcare for 500 pregnant women from poor families in Uttar Pradesh.
The campaign has been launched as an open challenge on the charity fundraising website Global Giving and will be run until March 27. Donors may contribute any amount starting from 10 dollar on the Global Giving website:

The project aims to ensure that the mothers-to-be have a safe pregnancy and enable them to deliver healthy babies under medical supervision. It also contributes towards improving the overall healthcare quality in the state starting with one mother-baby pair at a time.
"In India in every eight minutes a woman dies during pregnancy and childbirth. Pregnant women from poor communities are deprived of basic tests, medicine and nutrition, putting their and their babies lives at risk," said HLFPPT CEO, Sharad Agarwal.
"With concerted efforts we can give these women access to quality healthcare and prevent thousands of avoidable deaths," he added.

HLFPPT has already been working to address the problem through its network of hospitals called Merry gold Hospitals. It has partnered with 300 hospitals to provide safe pregnancy and delivery facilities to poor women, including medical checkups, counselling support, medicines, tests, nutritional supplements and delivery care.
More than 5,00,000 women have availed of the services through HLFPPT hospitals so far.
One of the beneficiaries of the project, Shanti Devi from Gonda in Uttar Pradesh said poor women in her community have difficulties getting quality healthcare because the big hospitals are out of reach for them.
