England manager Roy Hodgson has stepped down from his post after his side's humiliating defeat at the hands of underdogs Iceland that also saw them crash out of the European Championship on Tuesday.
England, which headed into the match hoping to secure a quarter-final berth, ended up suffering a 1-2 defeat against minnows Iceland at Allianz Riviera in Nice.
Soon after the defeat,the 68-year-old informed that he would be leaving his position on the expiry of his contract this month, thus ending his four-year tenure as England coach.
Hodgson, who succeeded Italian Fabio Capello as England manager,had managed to lead his team to only three victories in 11 games they played across three major tournament finals.
Recently, the outgoing chairman of the Football Association, Greg Dyke, has also informed that the minimum requirement for Hodgson to have his contract extended by two years will be to secure a quarter-final berth at Euro 2016.
Hodgson said that he would have loved to stay for another two years, but added that the time has come for someone else to oversee the progress of the young, hungry and extremely talented group' of players.
The Englishman, however, insisted that he is proud of the work he and his coaching staff have achieved over their time at the helm of England, the Guardian reported.
Hodgson has lead England to the 33 victories out of his 56 games in charge as England coach.
