Minister of State for Minority Affairs Ninong Ering and student delegation met Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Tuesday, and demanded a probe into the death of a student from Arunachal Pradesh, Nido Taniam, who was beaten with sticks in South Delhi's Lajpat Nagar area.

After his meeting with Shinde, Ering said the Home Ministry has assured them of a judicial enquiry.

"The Home Ministry is taking the issue of student death seriously, and has ordered for an enquiry. A committee will be constituted which will conduct the probe and find out the reason behind the incident," he said.

He also said that stringent action should be taken against the defaulters.

"There are three-four demands; one is that they have asked that we should have an anti-racial law, so that such kinds of activities do not take place in future also. There should be strict and stringent measures where we can take action against these wrong doers who treat the people of northeast as outsiders. So, the Home Minister has assured us and strict actions should be taken against the defaulters whoever it is, police or administration," he added.

Earlier on Monday, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi expressed solidarity with the North east students protesting against the Taniam's death at Jantar Mantar, and promised stringent action against the culprits.

Nido Taniam, a student from Arunachal Pradesh, had reportedly gone to Lajpat Nagar on January 29 in search of an address, and was allegedly mocked by someone at a shop for the style his hair.

In a fit of rage, Nido broke a glass at the shop but he paid money for that. Afterwards he was allegedly beaten with sticks.

The next day, when he didn't wake up, his friends rushed him to AIIMS, where he was declared dead.
