Minister of State, Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju on Thursday said that the home ministry never issued any directive to make Hindi a compulsory language in departments and added that this was being made into an unnecessary controversy.
"The home ministry never issued any directive to make Hindi a compulsory language in all departments. We aren't giving less importance to regional languages; this is an unnecessary controversy," said Rijiju.
"It was a regular meeting to promote our official language. We deny this allegation and for us every language is important. Some political parties are unnecessarily reacting to unfounded news, and it is wrong," he added.
Earlier today, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief M Karunanidhi condemned government's decision to give priority to Hindi on official social media interactions.
He said that it's an attempt to treat non-Hindi speakers as second class citizens.
