Number of pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong campaigning against China's plans to vet candidates in 2017 elections has decreased as many civil servants return to work in government headquarters.

The government deadline for the protesters to put an end to campaigns and leave has passed without incident.

According to the BBC, the number of protesters dwindled overnight.

The protesters demand that the central government in Beijing should allow a completely free vote for the territory's leader.

During the past week, there had been tens of thousands of protesters. However, about 100 protesters remain in the central district on Monday morning.

Some protesters have reportedly destroyed barricades and cleared roads so government officials could get in to work.
