Football fans planning to stay in Rio de Janeiro during the 2014 Brazil World Cup are facing a stratospheric growth in hotel room prices making guesthouses a viable alternative.

According to the Guardian, Brazil is bracing itself for an avalanche of English fans but many may balk at the country's prices.

A shortage of affordable hotel rooms means supporters will have to turn to saucy establishments such as Rio's Shalimar hotel, according to another British newspaper.

Its most popular room, the Medieval Suite, is decorated like a dungeon with a mirrored ceiling and chains hanging from the walls, the report said.

Rio de Janeiro, where the final will be held, has a shortage of hotel rooms and many are already fully booked up even though they are charging premium rates during the tournament, the report added.
