Australian batsman Phil Hughes has vowed to counter South Africa's fearsome speedsters, vowing to win the Test series.

Hughes missed the original 15-man touring party where now injured Shaun Marsh was preferred despite making 549 runs at 61 including a maiden double ton against Western Australia.

He said there have been a lot ups and downs, and in sport you take the highs with the lows.

Hughes knows he will have a target on his back after successfully countering pace duo Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel in Australia's 2009 upset series triumph.

He said he has played against South Africa before and had some success against them.

Shane Watson is the Test No. 3, but Marsh's demise could alter Australia's plans ahead of the series opener from February 12 at Centurion.
