Addressing the first of three scheduled rallies in Maharashtra on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described himself as a servant of the people of India and not a politician.
"Politicians have the habit of making promises during campaigns and then forgetting them. But I am not a politician, but your sevak (servant). That is why I have come back to remind you of the promises I had made to you earlier. I will give a detailed tab of my work," Prime Minister Modi said.
Launching a scathing attack on the Congress Party, he said, "We never make promises to win elections. We make promises to transform the lives of tribal communities. We don't make false promises like the Congress."
Talking of Maharashtra, he said, "Is there anyone born who can divide Chhatrapati Shivaji's Maharashtra? Without Mumbai there is no Maharashtra, without Maharashtra there is no India."
Taking another dig at the Congress Party, he said, "Election fever is making people who are on the verge of defeat to speak lies. Such politics went on for 60 years. Corruption happened in irrigation sector; you were supposed to get water but did not. But their bank accounts got filled."
Assuring the crowd that he himself is one of them, Prime Minister Modi said, "I don't need to take pictures with poor people. I have grown up with them. I come from amidst you and that is why my government wants to work for poor people."
Giving accounts of farmers who committed suicide, Prime Minister Modi said, "From last ten years, around 3700 farmers have been committing suicide every year in Maharashtra alone."
