Former Australia captain Ian Chappell has criticised Steve Smith's team, describing the current side's fielding as the worst since 1980s.

Chappell, who had represented his country in 75 Tests, said that it was a major concern and raised doubts on whether the current squad have players to rectify the abysmal fielding performance, News.com.au reported.

Australia's fielding came under heavy scrutiny during the second drawn Test against New Zealand in Perth as Ross Taylor was given a couple of run-out reprieves and dropped by the hosts during his record-breaking knock of 290.

Chappell said that Australia are very ordinary in catching apart from David Warner and Smith, adding that ground fielding and throwing wise are worse than the mid-80s side.
