Former Australian captain Ian Chappell has said that the new stand-in skipper Steve Smith could be appointed as the team's full time Test captain if he performs well, suggesting that injured Michael Clarke should be selected as a batsman if he returns.
Chappell said that Smith could captain the team if he would do a decent job, adding that Clarke should be chosen as a batsman instead on the account of his bad injury history, News.com.au reported.
Smith, who became Australia's 45th Test captain, was presented with captain's blazer by Mark Taylor before the start of the second Test against India at Brisbane.
