A month after it introduced laws making sexual harassment a criminal offence for the first time in Egypt, an Egyptian court on Wednesday sentenced seven men to life imprisonment and two to 20 years for sexually assaulting women in Cairo last month.
The women were attacked during celebrations at Tahrir Square following President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi's election. At least nine cases of sexual assault were registered in Tahrir square alone between June 3 and June 8 when Sisi's supporters gathered to celebrate his victory, the BBC reported.
The nine men, who were convicted, faced criminal charges for four different cases of sexual violence and assault, the report added.
