India were 82 for the loss of three wickets at lunch on the opening day of the first Test against South Africa in Mohali on Thursday.
Opting to bat first, India lost opener Shikhar Dhawan for a duck before Cheteshwar Pujara and Murali Vijay steadily built the innings by constructing 63-run partnership for the second wicket.
However, Pujara (31) and Test captain Virat Kohli (1) were dismissed in quick succession to peg back the hosts at the end of the first session.
Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane will resume the innings on their respective scores of 40 and 3.
After losing limited overs series, India are aiming to bounce back and salvage pride in the first of the four-match Test series.
